Kevin Banks, a Senior at Lincoln High School, Claims 1st Prize in 6th Annual Essay Contest

“As a young Black man from a single-parent household, I would like to defy the odds by becoming the first member of my immediate family to graduate from college. I am determined to make a positive impact on society but more importantly on my community. Being the second oldest of 8 (5 from my mother) and the oldest boy with 6 younger brothers, it is important for me to be a role-model to my brothers especially since our father has not been in any of our lives. I would also like to be a positive role-model to the youth from my neighborhood and … [Read more...]

A Bridge for Kids Lends Hand to Promising Teens

Since its inception in 2012, A Bridge for Kids has now awarded over 250 sponsorships to low income, high achieving students across San Diego. The original business plan was to identify promising low-income teens and connect them with a sponsor who would donate $1,000-$2,000 to assist these teens to purchase such basic educational needs as a laptop and printer so the teen could do homework at home. But their dream quickly expanded as the sponsored teens' requests revealed a far more compelling story: requests became anything from replacing the … [Read more...]

The Giving Tree provides joy to those that need it the most!

The Giving Tree event, organized by A Bridge For Kids at La Jolla Country Day School, has become a tradition of love. Together, our two organizations partner to provide over 300 San Diego foster and low income children a Holiday gift. For most of these children, this gift will be the only gift they will receive this holiday season. It is heartwarming to watch the Country Day students and parents excitedly peruse a board full of icons, each one naming a needy child, their age, and the gift they wish to receive this year; and then to see them … [Read more...]

East Coast College Tour Provides Eye Opening Experience

For many living in this country, July 4th is a day of celebration and a day to remember the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and The United States separation from the British Empire.  For most July 4th is a day to spend with family, cooking hot dogs on the grill or even relaxing at the beach.   However, this year, July 4th was anything but a day of rest for 9 high achieving, very excited teenagers who gathered at the airport at 5:00 AM ready to catch a flight from San Diego to Boston.  Many had never been out of San Diego let alone … [Read more...]

Helping young people in need... succeed!

Testimonial

"Aside from the tremendous financial help, ABFK has fueled and inspired me to pursue a career in education to give back to low income communities. With financial help and mentorship, I gained the confidence to make commitments towards my education to close the societal belief that low-income students cannot pursue a higher education."
