I am Madison Kumai, an honors student at Helix Charter High School. I have a GPA of 4.6, and am ranked 14th in my class. I am currently a high school senior, and I'm involved in lacrosse, National Honors Society and the California Scholarship Federation at my school. In the past I have also volunteered for 80+ hours at Sharp Grossmont Hospital and was on my high school's varsity cheer team. My dream is to one day get accepted into an Ivy League school so that I can major in biology and Japanese, and later become an Oncologist after completing … [Read more...]

Alumni Spotlight- Thao Phan, Wesleyan University

Thao Phan was just 7 years old in 2006 when her family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam. For Thao, one of the most difficult challenges in immigrating to a new country was adapting to a new education system that was so different from what she was used to. She credits A Bridge for Kids for helping with the transition, which ultimately allowed her to pursue her passions as a first-generation college student at Wesleyan University. Thao first learned about A Bridge for Kids through her college counselor at The Preuss School who … [Read more...]

Sponsor Needed! Thinh Vo, Preuss School ’20

I am a very optimistic student and I strive to be the best I can for myself and for my family. I always persevere in my education, my academics and my athletics. I invest a lot of my time in the sport of lacrosse which I enjoy playing a lot. I am currently on the boys lacrosse varsity team and I  look forward to getting better. I wish to spend part of the sponsorship on lacrosse gear and lacrosse sticks. This would benefit me in my practices and games. It would make me a much better player as I am more confident with working gear. I practice … [Read more...]

Alumni Spotlight – Salvador Terrones, San Diego State University ’18

When you think of the “helping” professions, a few examples might come to mind like nursing, medicine, social work or even law. But for A Bridge for Kids’ alumnus Salvador Terrones, it’s a commitment to giving back to his community that encouraged him to go into the business of helping people buy homes. Terrones’ dedication to serving his community in National City comes from his personal experience as a low-income, first generation college-bound student who spent part of his childhood as a ward of the court under the foster care system. … [Read more...]

Sponsor Wanted: Immigrant from Ethiopia Uses Life Experiences as Motivation

Living in a single parent household is very different from that with both parents. With only one income to support an entire family, it becomes difficult for all the needs of the family to be met. Having lived with both of my parents for 12 years and then transitioning to a single parent household the stark differences were very evident and hard to adjust to. My name is Rahel Chewaka and I live with my mother and two brothers in San Diego. After 5 years of living in Ethiopia, Africa I moved to California with my family. My mother is an … [Read more...]

Alumni Spotlight- Amanda Hinh, Brown University

Imagine being one of two daughters being raised by a single mother who held three jobs to support the family, working 10 hours a day, seven days a week with just a few days off. Money is very tight, so there are no available funds to allow you to be in an after school program while your mother works. Instead, she picks you and your sister up from school, and you stay in the car doing your homework while she returns to work. After work, you all return to the home that you share with your uncle. All the while, your mother instills in you the … [Read more...]

Sponsor Wanted: Student Athlete Sees Squash as a Way to Success

My name is Bezalel Aboye and I am a ninth grader at the Preuss School UCSD. The Preuss School offers mentoring and tutoring available for all students. The funds provided by the sponsors will help me organize my school materials. Having a small place where I can quietly do my homework will strongly affect my study habits. The mentors that A Bridge For Kids provides are very supportive. I really need encouragement and guidance during the remaining years at Preuss. Getting support from an adult that has been through similar struggles helps a lot. … [Read more...]

Sponsor Wanted: Student Athlete Sets the Bar High

Hello! My name is Lilian and I’m an eighth grader at The Preuss School UCSD. I know I have a long way to go, but I hope to continue on a good path to be successful at a four year university. For fun, I like to have movie nights with my sister. We watch a movie when everyone in the house is already asleep and stuff our faces with junk food like chips and candy. I also like to hang out with my friends and go to the mall and take photo booth pictures. Another thing I like to do for fun is bake. I may not be the best at it, but mixing all the … [Read more...]

Looking for a Sponsor: Hard Working Senior Beating the Odds

Eight years ago I was forced to restart my life. I was required to leave Mexico and start a new life with my family in the United States. With our entire family not knowing the smallest amount of English, it was the struggle to fulfill a daily life in the United States. My brothers and I were enrolled into Elementary as soon as possible, which was a quick transition for the start of our new education. My youngest brother Gustavo entered 1st grade, my second youngest brother entered 2nd grade and I entered 4th grade. The three of us did not know … [Read more...]

Helping young people in need... succeed!

Testimonial

"It's not easy to live in a society filled with privileged kids, expensive stores, and a school that asks for money for literally everything as a low income teen. It was with the help of an incredible non-profit organization, A Bridge For Kids, that has faded my worries of how I'm going to afford the things I need."

- Eric Tran, The Preuss School Class of 2019, Princeton University Class of 2023
