Looking for a Sponsor: Hard Working Senior Beating the Odds

Eight years ago I was forced to restart my life. I was required to leave Mexico and start a new life with my family in the United States. With our entire family not knowing the smallest amount of English, it was the struggle to fulfill a daily life in the United States. My brothers and I were enrolled into Elementary as soon as possible, which was a quick transition for the start of our new education. My youngest brother Gustavo entered 1st grade, my second youngest brother entered 2nd grade and I entered 4th grade. The three of us did not know any English, which made the school put us in special English classes. That first year we worked as a unit, always together. At the middle of the school year I was ask by some of the students if I wanted to join a soccer team they had going on after school. They had to tell me in Spanish because I didn’t understand English that well at the time. After accomplishing our first school year in the United States we knew enough English to go to the corner store and buy anything we wanted without been misunderstood, which was a really good achievement for us. I also had to face the fact that I had to move on to Middle school and would have to be alone. Also ended up playing for their team and that was the start of my soccer journey. As the next school year started I was still struggling to communicate with others in a really complicated way. I had two hour English classes in 6th and 7th grade which helped me even more than the Elementary classes I took back then. When the time came for me to start my 8th grade year I was shocked, it was the first time I was put into a normal English class. It didn’t end up so well, I average a final grade of a C and did not gain any confidence from that class. That was the end of my Middle School experience which then lead to the start of my High School experience. Besides me advancing to the next grade, my family and I had a blessing the summer between my 8th to 9th grade. My mother was pregnant with another little boy, my third brothers was on the way. My brothers and I were excited at first, just to realize that a little boy requires much attention. Once our newest member of the family was about 3 months old, we started to feel left out. My brothers and I felt into a depression, home wasn’t the same and our parents wouldn’t put much attention to us so we would be outside in the streets for most of the day. My brothers and I started as a unit but sooner than later we became distant from one another and started hanging out with people that weren’t good influences. When I started as a freshman I didn’t stay on the same path I had decided to. I started the school year with such a small desire of achieving good grades. I achieved below average grades the first semester and the second semester I achieved really bad grades… I was going in the wrong direction, achieving bad grades and doing things any teenager shouldn’t be doing. That’s when I realized I had reached rock bottom in my life but, I still didn’t care I just wanted to stay there and keep on having fun, not caring about anything or just getting into conflicts. That was my lifestyle for about 5 months but right before school went out again two people changed my life. Our athletic director Mrs. Butcher and my future to be law teacher Mrs. Candoor. They saw potential in me and decided not to let me take it to waste. They got my mind set right before I went off to the summer for my 9th grade to 10th grade. Thanks to those two beautiful independent women I was confident enough to retake the English class I had failed my second semester. As summer started I started summer school and not long from the start of it, I decided to flip my habits around. I ended up achieving an A as my grade for the English class I retook that summer and stopped hanging with the bad influences and people I used to be close with. I also started changing my brothers for the better step by step. Then it was time for me to start my sophomore year and I was ready. Once the school year started I put myself on track to a better destination and every time I felt lost I would ask those two special persons that changed me for help. At the end of the first semester I had achieved straight A’s and at the end of the second semester I had achieved one B and the rest were A’s. That year I had really put my efforts into my life and future which paid off at the end of that school year. I also had tried out for our school soccer team and made varsity, that year we made CIF and got eliminated during quarter-finals (1-0). My little brother was also a little older and my parents were able to pay more attention to my other brothers and I. My life had really changed and it was just the beginning of my come-up. Family got closer and answers were found, not the most wealthy out there but the must humble. About 3 weeks before my next school year I join a soccer club and was placed on a scholarship due to the fact that I couldn’t afford it but I had the talent they needed. My junior year was really busy and difficult, I earned about two B’s and the rest were all A’s, played tree sports, was part of ASB, became my class treasure and in addition I took the ACT and SAT. The sports I participated on were Cross Country, Soccer and Track and Field (long distance 3200 meters). Not knowing anything about Cross Country I was part of the first varsity scoring team in 10 years for my high school to win league. I was third man in the pack and learned so much from the sport. Then there I was, standing in a soccer field being one of the three captains in our varsity team. We won league and advance all the way to CIF finals. That’s where my life went downhill again, as we lost CIF finals in overtime against Holtville (1-0). I was to question myself the same question for weeks, “I’m I worthy of playing the beautiful game?” it would just keep on wondering in my mind. Then I became positive in myself again and decided to keep on moving forward. I decided to join Track and Field and run the 2 mile event, I didn’t accomplished much besides always beating my personal records and earning some metals. Once all my sports were done I just looked back and realized that it was a heck of a year. I know what you thinking, wow this kid really changed it around and he seems really positive about his life. Well yes I am positive about my life because I’m not the type to complain or tell you that I was the kid running in vans shoes during cross country practice until someone realized and gave me used running shoes that helped me improved. Just to finish Cross Country practice and go straight to my soccer club practice to finally come home do homework and if lucky sleep 6 hour for about 3 months. Neither I’m I to say that my cleats were so ripped that one day while going to practice I lucky found a pair of cleats my size in my ally, just to come home and spray painted them to finish soccer season with them. Oh and how forget that I didn’t have spikes to run in the track with and had to borrow some from my own teammates that weren’t running the events I was. Besides all that happening I always found a way! And I will continue to find one in every situation I have to deal with. This upcoming year I will take onto 4 AP classes, will continue to serve our ASB, continue to be my class treasure and will be the only captain returning to our soccer team. I look forward to keep on making history for my family since I am the one with the highest educational level at the moment and will continue to advance higher. Also dropped Cross Country and Track and Field since I’m trying to really focus on soccer to obtain a scholarship for college. I have come a long way and I’m not willing to go back until I reached my destination. I live my life by this saying, “While we breathe, we shall defend” and while I’m still breathing I will defend what I have worked so hard for. My name is Marco T and this is a quick summary of what I have lived half of my life.Sponsor Marco today!
