Sponsorships Are Nothing New to the Delke Family!
Hello! My name is Sarron Delke and I am currently a junior attending The Preuss School UCSD. I was originally born in Jacksonville, Florida to a family of 3 sisters and a single mother, but moved to San Diego at the age of 3, when my family ran into some financial struggles. My mother was struggling to pay the bills, but she took action and worked two jobs to stabilize our financial state while we stayed at home under the supervision of our aunt.
Because my mother never really had the best opportunities available for her, she consistently reminds me to take advantage of the chances that I am presented with, and to learn to appreciate them. Her saying this has made me grasp the opportunities I do have available for me. With my mom’s advice I started looking for these opportunities and stumbled upon the sponsorship program “Bridge for Kids”, a program to help share low-income kids’ stories and inspire students to pursue their dreams. One of my sisters, Demmie, is part of this program, which helped minimize our computer problem because, with the sponsorship money, Demmie bought herself a Laptop for her own use. Fortunately this left my older sister and me to only have to share between the two of us. This opportunity also allowed my sister Demmie to realize her passion for playing guitar. This program made it possible for her to buy herself a guitar and teach herself some chords that helped fulfill her desire.
Some dreams of mine come and go but the ones that stuck around were my passions for singing, playing lacrosse/volleyball, and journaling. Music and singing have always been a part of my life since I joined the elective choir class and started to learn more about it. Music and singing have always been so important to me that I even put some thought into pursuing one of my dreams of creating a Youtube channel to showcase my music. I have been playing lacrosse for 2 years and volleyball for 1 year. I cherish the moments I had in school when I would be able to play my favorite sports while staying active at the same time. Staying active is really important to me because my family and I love to work out together whenever we can to boost our energy for the day. I recently got into journaling because of the Coronavirus epidemic. This has really helped me cope with this situation and helped clarify in my mind how serious it is. Since I want to pursue a career in the medical field, I have been inspired by the stories of people assisting in any way possible, doing their best to limit the cases from multiplying, which could one day be me.
If given this money I would first buy a laptop, because in the past sharing with my 2 sisters took a huge toll on our grades. Recently my oldest sister received her own laptop as a graduation gift, and Demmie has bought her own laptop, but this still leaves me having to share with one of my siblings. Receiving $1,000 and investing in a laptop will help me continue my education through high school and college. I would then buy uniforms for school because uniforms can be expensive, especially if you want the most durable ones. While shopping for uniforms I often find that the most affordable uniforms are the ones that wear out the fastest, so this could potentially save my family’s hard earned money. Lastly, I would buy a mic set so I would have the right equipment to help further my dream of creating a Youtube channel where I can sing and put it out there for the world.
