There has never been a better time to sponsor an “at risk” teen!
A Bridge for Kids is a San Diego based nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the raising and distribution of funds to teenagers in need. We focus on this age group because historically it has had the greatest financial need, yet has received the least support. We believe these impressionable “teen” years are a make or break period in a child’s life and without both financial and emotional support, many are at risk of becoming another statistic. It is a fact that each year over 200 teens will age out of the Foster Care system here in San Diego. Of that group less than 55% will have earned a high school diploma, no more than 50% are likely to be employed, 25% will find themselves homeless and only 2% will ever earn a college degree. Not surprisingly this leads to 25% of former foster youth being incarcerated with the first 2 years out on their own.
Not surprisingly, in a study done by the Center for Business and Economic Research it was concluded that children “who grew up in a financially secure situation find it easier to succeed in life, they are more likely to graduate from high school, more likely to graduate from college, and these are things that will lead to greater success in life.” Unfortunately due to the recent recession and current high unemployment rates this current group of teens “who as they become adults may be less able to contribute to the growth of the economy. This could go on for multiple generations.”
At A Bridge for Kids we strive to provide every child with an opportunity to succeed by providing everything from basic necessities, school supplies, computers, athletic equipment, to money needed to attend a summer camp or school trip. We pride ourselves on tailoring each sponsorship to specific needs of each teenager.
