Since I was little, I have been in search of my own true passion. When trying to find that passion I took an interest in language- the way each language would allow you to communicate with someone, the way it allowed me to meet so many different people. But knowing that there are so many different languages in the world and yet I only know two of them, made me want to learn more about the languages I know. My name is Sofia Garcia and I speak both Spanish and English.
Obviously, my love for language paved the way to love the subject of English which is one of my favorite classes. It allows me to understand more and more about the world from different perspectives; it allows me to explore different and new ideas in many different ways. For example, literature is a mix of reading and writing and it has taught me about the unique reflections and imaginations of other people. How one can write a book and tell their story, make us imagine the words on the page, and excite us to the point where we wonder “What if?” In the future, I would like to explore more about English and find one dream that I won’t regret following.
I have played many sports but volleyball is one of the few sports that became a passion after being a hobby. To me, volleyball was only a game I played with my family and friends but, as years passed, it became something I wanted to learn more about and hope to continue doing in the future. I love the competition of the sport and being part of a team.
My parents have worked hard to provide my brother and me with the essentials we need to succeed and I will always be grateful for that.
I am lucky to be a freshman at The Preuss School UCSD but, because it’s not a neighborhood school, I spend 90 minutes each way, every day, commuting on the trolley. In addition, I spend a lot of time at my brother’s extracurricular activities, leaving me to do my homework in the car, without internet access. This sponsorship would allow me to purchase a mobile hotspot so that I could continue doing my homework wherever I am. That would also allow me to possibly enroll in an online language course. And it’s never too soon to start studying for the SATs, so I would also like to be able to buy study materials so that I will be as prepared as possible for future college admissions.
Finally, I love helping others. Others say I’m kind, intelligent, helpful, and creative but I think I just do that naturally. If I were to define myself, I would say I am someone diligent in what I do and somewhat daring. While I love helping others that passion became stronger after seeing what doctors really do. My grandfather got sick when I was around 12 years old and seeing them try to help him, even though they were only able to help him with little things, made me wonder how the little things actually mattered, how those doctors decided to dedicate their lives to helping people. That made me realize how important they are to me and my family, and helping people is something I would like to do in the future. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if, in the future, I could inspire someone in the same way?
