Sponsor Needed! Yared Fente- The Preuss School, UCSD

My name is Yared Fente, I attend the Preuss School UCSD, and I am in my freshman year of high school. I was born on August 16th, 2007 and am currently 14 years old. In school, my favorite subjects are biology and math. I enjoy biology, because I am learning about life, such as human and plant cells, and in turn, understanding more about the processes of my own body. I enjoy math because of its utility in my life. I can use it to do mental math, and the formulas I learn in class, such as the quadratic formula, amaze me because the problem might seem confusing at first, but I love the process of learning how to solve and understand the equation. My hobbies include playing sports, such as basketball and squash, reading, and exercising. I enjoy sports because of its competitive nature, I enjoy the despair of losing, and the triumph of winning. It is also a chance for me to show my hard work, to show that I’m willing to go the extra mile to stay dominant in any sport I play. I love reading, especially realistic fiction, because it’s essentially another world, and imagining that world is a wonder for me. I love exercising, because of the burn it gives after I’m done, because that’s the fruition of my hard work. I am part of the Robotics Club at Preuss, and I enjoy Robotics because it’s related to math. Everything needs to be perfect, or within a certain margin of being perfect, to work. Also, seeing something thought out on a computer screen literally built and “brought to life”, shows the fruition of my hard work. I really enjoy seeing the fruition of my hard work come to light, and that motivates me to do even better.

I have had numerous struggles, especially during my childhood. I was considered obese to an alarming degree, I was bullied, and I struggled being myself during school. I was able to overcome these challenges through hard work, and dedication towards giving myself a better life, one in which I was happier, and not getting bullied. During quarantine, I worked out with my friends and aunt, and slowly, my weight and fat content returned to near healthy levels. I learned that bullies rely on the bullied reaction, to make themselves feel good about themselves. This helped me control my anger, and learn to shed the fake personality I was creating for myself. I always have to overcome these struggles constantly because I still feel insecure about myself at times, from my abilities, to my body, etc. A major lesson that I learned from these struggles, one that shaped me, was that hard work is always going to work.

The college I wish to attend is Harvard University, based in both Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts. I wish to attend Harvard because of their prestige in the world. To go to Harvard would be an honor as well as a daunting road to walk. Harvard also has one of the best medical schools in the country, which ties into my career choice. When I grow up, I will be a surgeon, the type I am not sure. I chose to want to become of a surgeon/doctor because of my fascination with the human body. I was never satisfied with diagrams we saw in our life sciences class, I wished to see what the body actually looked like.

I believe that I deserve the scholarship because I believe that I can use this scholarship to the highest degree possible for my success. This scholarship will boost my potential to another level, one of which I can use to become successful and satisfied with life. I have multiple prospective uses for the money I could get from this program. My first use would likely be a computer, as my personal computer broke. But I believe that I could profit more from the academic support. Although I have excellent grades, I think I could aid from the SAT/ACT practice, as well as the guidance from sponsors. Thank you for your consideration!

“I was embarrassed to ask my parents for a pair of running shoes because I knew that they could not afford them. I don’t know what I would have done without A Bridge for Kids and my most generous and wonderful Sponsor!”
