“You are going to have a brother,” my mom told me. You could never imagine how these words changed my life. My brother was born with Downs Syndrome. He motivates me to succeed in life. Like him, when I put my head into something, I accomplish it. I saw my parents’ frustration when they would tell my brother to do something and he did not understand. At that moment I told myself I would try to work twice as hard at school to make up for my brother’s incapacity.
I started getting myself on top of things and I tried to understand everything I was being taught. My name is Karla, I am at the top 10% of my class and a part of the International Baccalaureate Program at Castle Park High School. Being part of the IB program has opened my eyes to be more aware of the world around me. During my sophomore year, I was lucky enough to take an educational tour around Italy. There I was able to learn about the culture of Italy and how it has influenced Italians in everyday life. I can also say that I currently have a 4.3 GPA, rank 7th in my class and will graduate high school with honors.
Lille by little, I am accomplishing my goals and I never let people tell me that I cannot accomplish them. With a little help I will be able to achieve my dreams!
