Aileen

Some of my favorite moments are during the late night hours after a long day of school, extracurriculars, and at home responsibilities. When I sit on my vanity, play comforting music and apply my favorite pieces of makeup, it becomes peaceful. The space contains only me with my thoughts. For me, music exists as my personal expression, my escape. Music shows me that I can still exist as my genuine self through all of my life challenges. The principle of showing up during difficult times has become my identity throughout my life.

My name is Aileen, I am a high school student that strives for excellence in academics and extracurricular activities. I am currently a 10th grader that attends Gompers Preparatory Academy in San Diego. I participate in Varsity Cheer, Model United Nations, and STARPAL, which helps me serve and give back to my community. The most valuable lessons I’ve learned throughout my life are essential and valuable, demonstrated by my family. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity A Bridge For Kids has given me. By sharing my story I hope to share my characteristics and the experiences that have shaped me into the young lady I am today.

Growing up as the youngest and only daughter in my family, shaped my perspective on responsibility and success. Given that position at a young age, I’ve always aspired to succeed, not only for myself, but for my family. Especially to my parents, who sacrificed a lot for me to provide me a better future. This taught me the value of responsibility and effort. Throughout my school and personal life, I always try my best to make the most out of every opportunity provided for me. Watching their hard work has taught me the importance of responsibility, perseverance, and gratitude.

I take pride in my character, my achievements, and self- discipline. As a high school student, I push myself to study harder at school because I understand that my academic performance will determine my future. I maintain strong grades through my advanced placement classes. For example, AP World History and AP Spanish. Although math has been a subject I’ve struggled with for the longest, through perseverance and effort, I've continued to push myself and ask for help when I need it most. In all honesty, there were moments when I felt overwhelmed by the workload and expectations, but I realized challenges grow my integrity and skills. Therefore, I chose not to give up, I asked for guidance and managed to stay committed even when it was difficult. Through this experience, I learned that growth often comes from persistence, not perfection.

Through my involvement in school activities, I have also learned the importance of being a positive role model for others, especially when things feel uncomfortable or scary. In athletics, I experienced this first hand. My coach placed me as a flyer for stunting, a role that came with a lot of pressure and responsibility. I was scared I wouldn't land my elite, and there were moments when I felt overwhelmed and doubted myself because competition in December was so soon. Even when I felt unsure, my coach continued to push me because she believed I was capable of more than I realized. At first, the pressure felt heavy, and I was afraid of letting my team down. Still, I showed up to practice every day, trusted my teammates, and kept trying. Eventually, not only did we land our elite but our whole routine!

That moment meant more than just completing a skill. It showed me that growth often comes from being pushed past fear and learning to believe in yourself even when confidence feels shaky. Our team earned 3rd place in CIFS Competition a cheer my first year participating. This accomplishment reflects the commitment, dedication, teamwork, and willingness I took on to step outside my comfort zone. Competing together and earning third place at the CIFS competition made all the hard work worth it. Through this experience, I learned the value of teamwork, resilience, and leading by example, even when I feel scared.

I am incredibly thankful for the chance to be considered for this opportunity. A Bridge For Kids represents more than financial support to me. I am committed to working towards my academic goals, preparing myself for my future, and honoring the sacrifices my parents have made for me. Being a role model and a student who works endlessly is very important to me. I’m very grateful to be able to share my story and hopefully inspire others to keep going and strive for excellence.
