Deborah
My name is Deborah, I’m a 14-year-old at Lemon Grove Academy Middle School. I am highly driven and focused in my academics. I love to draw in my art class and in my free time. I also like to sing, and dance which I do at school on my school’s team. Additionally, I play tennis at Helix Charter School which is local to me. But my favorite hobby is skincare.
Growing up I’ve always had buttery smooth brown skin with not a pimple in sight. Around the 6th grade every time I’d look in the mirror I’d notice something different: multiple small pimples showing up on my forehead. I was curious about why they were showing up on my forehead only. Months went by and my skin seemed to get even worse. I decided to take action and researched how to start a skincare routine. As I researched I didn’t see people who looked like me giving solutions or advice to the problem I had, which made it even more difficult to figure out what the problem with my skin was because of how skin issues look different on people with melanin. Being lower income I didn’t have access to a dermatologist, which led to me experimenting with different products and repeatedly going through the cycle of damaging and repairing my skin.
This whole experience is what motivates me to wanting to become a dermatologist, A pediatric one to be specific. I want to be able to help younger people that have similar issues with their skin journey. I want younger people to feel confident in their skin and with how it looks. I’ve learned to love researching and the field of skincare. I hope to carry this passion and turn it into a career in dermatology. I plan on attending a four-year university so that I can study human biology and anatomy and attend medical school.
With the A Bridge For Kids program I would use the sponsorship to get school support such as notebooks, pencils, pens, and calculators. I also plan on joining my high school tennis team so I would need to buy sports equipment. Lastly, I also would pay for my AP tests so that I can be able to focus on studying and doing my best so that I can get college credits and further my education. Thank you for your consideration.
