Jianan

I’m Jianan, a motivated 8th grader who attends the Preuss School UCSD. I enjoy playing soccer, coding, and learning about investments and graphic design independently. In 2014, my family and I moved to America so I could get a better education and future. Prospering in America has always been a challenge of ours, especially when we were getting adjusted here. Unbeknownst to me, America brought so many great experiences and opportunities I wouldn’t have gotten in China.

Getting to my current position was incredibly difficult for us. Back in 2015 when I started school in America, I was behind in academics. This was especially true for English. As a result, I got tutoring. Even so, getting proficient in English required me to work extremely hard. My parents primarily spoke Chinese at home. As a result, understanding my teachers and peers at school was tough. This language barrier made me feel like an outsider. My strong feeling of awe motivated me to work hard, even when success was not in my favor. It taught me to always try my best and never to give up because anything is possible with enough determination. By 7th grade, I had been moved up to 8th-grade math. I currently have a 4.0 GPA.

Unfortunately, my family’s finances have always been tight. I have been stressed and missed opportunities due to our financial situation. My mother is supporting our family of three by herself. I live with my mother and grandmother. Getting sponsored would mean I can advance faster in sports, hobbies, and academics without worry and guilt. Your support would mean that I can have a more successful future. If I get sponsored, I would spend the money on soccer gear, soccer training, and a laptop for schoolwork and coding. This sponsorship would get me closer to my college goal of attending Stanford majoring in Computer Science.

After college, I would like to form my own software company. To reach this long-term goal, I am teaching myself how to code. Owning a company also requires leadership, teamwork, and financial management skills. I actively participate in Boy Scouts and student government to enhance these skills. In the past, I have also owned and operated a sneaker reselling business. This business taught me how to budget, be patient, manage finances, and create plans. I would like to get closer to my goal of forming a software company with soccer. Soccer will familiarize me with how to interact with those around me and make quick and effective decisions. All of these activities will prepare me for my future.

Your sponsorship will help me prepare for college by giving me more financial and educational resources. Most importantly, ABFK will better prepare me for entrepreneurial success. I greatly appreciate the opportunities that you are giving me to be excellent. I assure you that I will do my best to make the most of my resources. Thank you for reading my personal statement.
