Mairim
Hi, I’m Mairim! I’ll start by talking about my past. I am the youngest of 3 and am the only girl not including my mother in my Hispanic home. Growing up, I always thought that I was less than a man because I was a girl and could never beat my older brothers at anything. I didn’t try that much in school because I thought “I’m a girl” and no one would notice me. I thought that I would never do anything great with my life.
In sixth grade it changed. My middle school very rarely had guest speakers, but this day was different. It had one. I felt like I was like her or she was like me but I saw her doing great things out in the world when she finished speaking about her time in a very male dominated field. I went up to her and wanted to learn more about how she got there. How she did that I wanted to be like her. I wanted to help and change the world. I told her everything and she told me, “Don’t ever put yourself down and don’t let anyone else do it if you do then you're proving them right.” I stood by that for the rest of middle school.
There were times that I put myself down but I got out of that mindset. Then we get to present me! Right now, I don’t put myself down and don’t let others. Sometimes I give up hope but I always get back up on my feet and keep working hard to change the world. Right now I’m pushing myself to take as many classes and do as many activities. I'm pushing myself because I want to go to an ivy league school and become successful and talk to people to inspire others like inspiring me, to change the world.
