Roy
Hi, my name is Roy, I currently go to El Cajon Valley High school and I am a freshman. I am in the graduating class of 2029, but getting here wasn’t so easy. Growing up wasn’t the easiest because of the language barrier, my first language is Chaldean and not English. Due to this, learning English and being new to a school was challenging, having to learn without knowing what the teacher is saying, not understanding anything, making sure I am on the same page as everyone. All this was very challenging and when I grew up my parents also had barely moved to the U.S.
Being new to the country they knew very little and very little English. Me and my siblings had to be the ones to teach them and translate what everyone said to them. This wasn’t so easy due to us barely knowing English also, it was a very important thing to know how to speak English because everyone in this new country spoke it.
From that point on I did my absolute best in school and tried to learn as much as I possibly could, and it was very challenging. Currently I am taking the only 2 honors classes available, honors English and Math which are challenging but good because they help me learn even more. The rest of my 4 classes are all college preparation classes.
School is still kind of challenging due to the language barrier but I manage to get by. Right now I am making sure I am getting good grades and I also like to play sports like soccer and volleyball and many others. I would like to join a sport this year and hopefully make the team. Growing up I played soccer and soccer was all around me. Everyone I knew played soccer and I eventually got into soccer too.
One day I hope to be an engineer or even a realtor, but there is much more than just getting the job and education is one of the things I need to hopefully get one of those jobs in the future. In the future I hope that I can make it successfully into UCSD and that I am able to have a family and be able to provide for hopefully with one of my dream jobs. I also hope that in the future I am able to join a team for soccer or volleyball so that I can maybe play sports in college.
If I had $1,000 to spend on myself and only had 1 year to spend it I would spend most of it on school supplies like a laptop or maybe even earbuds to help me listen to music while doing work so I can focus and get books and school supplies like notebooks, pencils, and binders. I also would spend some of it towards athletics like I would buy volleyball shoes and shoes for soccer and maybe even spend some of the money to buy myself things that I need to help pursue my future of being an engineer or a realtor. The $1,000 would be really helpful towards school so that I am able to take notes and not only have 1 chromebook that I use for school that has restrictions but be able to have a laptop that I can study for tests with and look into the future college I want to go to (UCSD). I would like to go to UCSD because I have seen some of the professors and students that are at the University because my brother goes there and most of them seem kind-hearted and they seem very helpful and social. The school seems like a good fit for me since I am very helpful and kind to others like the students and professors at UCSD.
