Sabrina
My name is Sabrina, and I am currently in 9th grade at O’Farrell High School. I was born in Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea. Despite English being my second language, math is my favorite subject. At school, I participate in three sports: basketball, track, and girls flag football. I come from a family of eight, including my parents, my brother, and four sisters.
Growing up, my dad worked tirelessly to provide for our family, especially when we were living in Eritrea, where safety was a concern. Back home, there was a lack of resources and education. So eventually, my parents made the brave decision to move to San Diego in search of a better life, education, and opportunities for our family. It was a difficult choice for them, leaving behind everything they knew and loved.
Once arriving in San Diego, adapting to the American lifestyle and culture while learning English was quickly very challenging for me and my family. My parents had to find jobs and manage endless bills, while I had to work hard to excel in school. After learning English, life got easier. However, during my seventh-grade year, I encountered difficulties in my classes during the first semester. My grades were not as strong as I had hoped. When my report card arrived a few weeks later, my dad eagerly opened it, anticipating good grades as usual.
However, upon seeing my grades of D's and C's, I could sense the disappointment in his eyes. He asked me about it, and I knew I had to do better. I felt as though I had let him down. From that moment on, I made a personal commitment to never receive a grade lower than 85 percent. I dedicated myself to studying diligently and making the most of every opportunity to improve. In the end, my hard work paid off. I graduated from eighth grade with a 4.0 GPA and received honors. Seeing my parent's joy and feeling my own sense of accomplishment was truly rewarding because I started off with nothing to something life-lasting.
As I am in 9th grade, I hope to graduate high school with a cumulative GPA of 3.80 or higher and honors. I hope one day to be a doctor in the future. To reach my goals, I can rely on A Bridge for Kids to support me in various ways. This program offers tutoring to help me with my schoolwork and provides opportunities to visit colleges and universities and to explore different majors. Which will be incredibly valuable when I apply for college in my senior year. Additionally, the program offers scholarships that I can use to purchase school supplies and sports equipment. Sports equipment can be quite costly, with an average cost of $100 or more per sport. I'm determined to succeed, and with your help, I believe I can achieve my dreams. Thank you for considering my request.
