A Bridge for Kids Launches Tutoring Program

In today’s world, college preparation does not start in the 11th grade.  For today's Seniors to get into their "dream school", it is important to have strong grades in both the 9th and 10th grades to build a strong overall GPA that can be reported on a college application.

With this in mind, A Bridge For Kids is introducing a new pilot Tutoring Program specifically targeting those 8th– 10th grade teens who have both a financial need and a demonstrated academic potential to earn good grades but have not been able to reach this potential due to outside influences which have distracted them from their studies.  A Bridge for Kids expects this program to provide the academic support that will allow the student the chance to have dedicated time and space to devote to studies, improve their study habits, increase their knowledge level in identified subjects, and ultimately improve their grades and overall GPA.To initiate this pilot program, we have partnered with students from High Tech High in Point Loma and beginning last week our first student was enrolled in the program.  A Bridge For Kids will pay for tutoring each week for a period of three months. Progress reports will be submitted by the tutor on a monthly basis and at the conclusion of the three month period, all parties involved will assess the teen’s progress, determine the efficacy of the program and decide whether it should be continued.  Criteria to be assessed will be based upon:

  • Grade improvement
  • Attendance (100% attendance is expected)
  • Completion of assignments
  • Overall effort applied by student (per tutor’s assessment)
  • Subject teacher’s input regarding classroom performance.

A Bridge for Kids is currently looking for additional students to take part in this pilot program.  If you wish to learn more about this program or if you know of a student who meets the above criteria, please contact Randi Shanken @ rshanken@abridgeforkids.org.
