Meet the Team: Angela

Working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure underprivileged students have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive is our invaluable team member Angela. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Angela, our incredible Community Relations Manager.

A Journey Rooted in Service

Growing up in the Washington D.C. area, Angela attended Bowdoin College, where she pursued a unique double major in Art History and Physics, graduating in 1988. After two years working in sales, she went on to earn her law degree from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1993.

In 1997, Angela and her family relocated to San Diego, where she began channeling her talents into volunteering — first through her children's schools, clubs, and activities, and later through causes that resonated deeply with her values. All the while, she practiced law until 2002 – a year after welcoming her second child.

"I have been incredibly fortunate to be in a position to contribute to philanthropic organizations both financially and with my time," Angela shares. "Engaging in the broader world has benefits not only to the organizations but also makes life more fulfilling for me."

Connecting with A Bridge for Kids

Angela’s path to ABFK began through a connection at her children's secondary school, where she met Mike and Tammy Nance, founders of A Bridge for Kids. Learning about the organization's mission to support underprivileged students in academics, athletics, and the arts immediately resonated with her as a parent.

"It felt important to enable others less fortunate to have similar opportunities to excel," she explains.

Making an Impact

As Community Relations Manager, Angela serves as the crucial link between ABFK and the educators who know students best: counselors, advisors, and teachers. Her role focuses on raising awareness about the opportunities ABFK offers and encouraging nominations of deserving students.

She ensures that schools are informed about scholarship opportunities, essay contests, and other programs available to all students, not just those already sponsored by ABFK.

Although her role primarily involves working with schools, she occasionally steps into student interviews, giving her the chance to meet some of the incredible young individuals ABFK supports.

"Through these interviews, I have met some amazing students. Many have numerous obstacles in their way. In the face of their obstacles, every person I have met has had an optimism and drive to succeed," she says. "It’s truly inspiring."

Breaking Down Barriers

Angela sees firsthand how even seemingly small needs (like sports equipment, art supplies, or uniforms) can present major hurdles for students. Through ABFK’s support, students can meet these needs without adding financial stress to their families.

"Almost as important as the student’s ability to meet their needs without asking their parents," she explains, “Our students are aware of their family’s financial situation and don’t want to be a burden. ABFK allows them to pursue their dreams without burdening their families."

By working closely with schools and educators, Angela ensures that ABFK continues to be a trusted resource, helping students overcome these everyday barriers and focus on their futures.

Looking Ahead

As ABFK continues to grow, Angela is excited to see the organization reach even more students in need. Her advice to anyone considering getting involved in philanthropy:

"Find the issues that speak to you and jump in.  You never know how your time, energy and financial support can make a difference in the lives of others.  But whatever you do, it will make a difference to someone."

We are so grateful for Angela’s passion, her energy, and her unwavering commitment to our mission. With team members like her, the future of A Bridge for Kids (and the students we serve) is bright.
