Miguel- A Focus on Education

Although I have Mexican blood in me, I am the first of my family members to have been born in the United States. I come from a very hard working family; unfortunately they did not receive a higher level education due to economic problems when they lived in Mexico. Ever since my father came to the U.S. he has worked in several jobs such as construction, while my mother has worked in department stores and currently works at a daycare. These jobs may not pay as well as other professions, yet my family always tries to supply me with the necessary tools I need for a higher education. Even though my family tries not to pressure me, sometimes I find an inner motivation of being the first one in my family with an opportunity to do something positive with my life. Most of my family does not speak English so they are not able to help me with anything school related nor are they able to communicate with other adults about my progress in school. When it comes to school my after school activities, I am on my own!Soccer has always set my mind free of my family’s economic and emotional circumstances by entertaining me and relieving my stress. However, recently it is the reason why my grades are not meeting my expectations. I have very little and old soccer equipment. For a few months now, I have been trying to buy new equipment but I lack the necessary funds. The only solution available for me is to work. I have been working with my dad in floor installation after school and on weekends. I know my parents need to pay their debts so I assured my dad he would not have to pay me much. Debts are more important than soccer equipment but that means in order to acquire the necessary funds, I would have to work more often. I come home from work at late hours and my body and brain are fatigued. I find myself doing homework and studying until midnight or even 1 in the morning. Although this job hasn't given me enough income to buy all the essential gear for soccer, I am slowly progressing and am proud of finally getting what I need through my own merit. With hope but most importantly through hard work, I will soon go to my soccer practices and games not embarrassed about having low quality cleats, ripped socks, or shorts that are not the appropriate size anymore. In 10 years, I see myself with a degree in business. I have various goals. One of them is to enjoy the profession I choose and receive an income that would allow me to travel on vacations. The most important of my goals is to help my parents and give them the honor they deserve for sacrificing so much for me. I am planning to major in business so in the future I am able to establish a soccer company where I would teach kids how to play and also donate equipment. I am hopeful that A Bridge for Kids can help alleviate some of the financial stress in my life and allow me to reach my potential.
