Overcoming Obstacles on Road to Success!

Hello, my name is Angel, I am a 9th grader at Gompers Preparatory Academy and I was born in Tijuana, Mexico. My dad worked really hard, sometimes up to 12 hours a day during 6 years to bring us to the United States legally. I came to live in the United States in August of 2013, I did not know anyone and I did not know how to read, write, nor speak English. The first six months were really hard for me, they were stressful, tiring, hard, and exhausting, but I worked hard to be where I am at right now. I have had family problems, problems with really close friends, problems related to school, and I have lost very important people in my life; but that hasn’t stopped me from being an outstanding student at GPA. It hasn't been easy, my family is a low income family and my life has been hard in thousands of ways. I'm a very enthusiastic person.  I'm the type of person who really wants to succeed in life and I won't stop until I succeed.  “I feel like anybody can do anything they set their mind to...it depends on how bad you want it”  - Marshall Matters is the quote that runs my life.I am a Student-ATHLETE and I like running Cross Country and Track and Field. I’m also a Key Club member and I'm currently taking my first AP class and I'm planning on attending a summer school program. I think I would be a good candidate for the following reasons: I would spend the money on buying sports gear, (for example: Running shoes, Track shoes, Compression shorts, sport bags) I would also pay my AP exams which are $55 dollars each and that also will help me with my summer school programs which goes from $2500 to $6000. The scholarship would help me acquire the items I need for the sports I am involved with and to help pay a portion of the summer school program. It is difficult for my parents to provide me with the help since my dad is the only one who has a job and is not stable, he can work for 2-3 weeks and then not work in 1-2 weeks, besides he has to pay bills and rent. His monthly income sometimes is not enough.I'm a very committed person, I don't give up, and if I start something I will finish it. Learning how to read, speak and write English in 2 years wasn't easy and I never gave up and I will never give up until I master English completely. I want to go to Harvard University and become a Mechanical Engineer. I really want to be part of all the programs and activities you provide and offer, and I will work really hard to be one of the chosen students.Angel was sponsored on April 29th, 2016 but there are 100's of other deserving students, just like Angel, that are waiting to be sponsored.  If you would like to make a difference in the life of a young person please contact us at 858-812-3150.
