The Holiday Season Just Got Brighter for Local Foster Youth

A Bridge For Kids was honored to partner with The La Jolla Country Day School to organize “The Giving Tree” program which provides Christmas gifts for over 400 Forster Care Kids and low income teens in San Diego. Thanks to the generosity of staff and families at The La Jolla Country Day School, this annual program allows families to choose a child and grant them a wish by providing the child with a gift that he or she has requested. This year, the gifts included bikes, iPods, stuffed animals, games, arts and crafts and even baby clothes, a request made by a teen mom for her six-month-old son. Each of these gifts was donated by a family at the La Jolla Country Day School in support of local foster youth.

Even though there was a $50 suggested gift amount, many LJCDS students teamed up with their Advisory groups and collected money to make some “extra special” wishes came true!  One group of students each contributed enough money to buy one lucky young man an iPad mini.  Everyone shopped like crazy, filling over 400 wishes that will likely be the only gift these kids get this season! Many of the kids supported through this effort are in group homes where they will spend the holidays without family.  It literally takes 100’s of hours, 100’s of generous families, many, many volunteers and a few special angels to make this all happen and for everyone that was involved this year we are thankful.

In addition to providing gifts for Foster Care Youth, Country Day families donated a total of $10,000 for A Bridge For Kids teens. Two very deserving teens who were the recipients of some of this money were Sinai and Ronald, students at The Preuss School. Sinai and Ronald have both faced overwhelming challenges and hardships in their lives but strive to excel in school, be the first in their family to attend college, and create successful futures.IMG_8604A Bridge For Kids would like to extend our deep appreciation to La Jolla Country Day for partnering with us to create and implement “The Giving Tree”. Specifically, we want to acknowledge and thank Susan Nordenger, Community Service Director, for her constant support with this program and Gary Krahn, Head of School, for welcoming our organization onto the campus. Additionally, we would like to acknowledge Scott Barton, Principal and Director at The Preuss School for partnering with us to identify and nominate students for sponsorship through ABFK.IMG_8572IMG_8483While the Giving Tree has come to a close for this year, it is never too late to give a “hand up” to a teenager in need.
