Summer Speaker Series

A Bridge for Kids welcomed Abed (CEO of Havas Edge, a local entrepreneur and first-generation Columbia University graduate) to share his personal story of resilience, ambition, and the power of hard work. Growing up in a low-income household, Abed understood from an early age the challenges that come with limited resources and opportunities. Instead of letting those challenges define him, he used them as motivation to push forward.

Abed spoke candidly about his journey through college, touching on how things don’t always go as planned. When Abed first got to Columbia he wanted to pursue a career in law, however he grappled with personal issues after his father’s untimely passing, and fell into a slump of self medication. After graduating, Abed lived at home with his mother for some time. To fill the time he took a job at an overnight summer camp.

“They were 13 years old, I was about the same mental maturity, it was great!”, Abed humbly exclaimed.

However, this summer camp job would change the entire trajectory of Abed’s professional career, landing him in the realm of Performance Media. (Watch our reel on our Instagram or LinkedIn to find out just how it happened).

Abed also discussed his current career as a business owner, providing insight into what it takes to launch and grow a company. Abed didn’t start at the top. He actually started at the bottom rung of Havas, and (as cliche as it sounds) literally climbed his way to the top. Students appreciated his transparency about the challenges of his work and personal life, as well as his practical advice on time management, networking, and pursuing work that aligns with personal passions.

Throughout the session, students asked thoughtful questions and engaged in lively conversation, leaving them inspired and empowered to chase their own dreams. Abed’s message was clear: where you start does not define where you can go.

A Bridge for Kids is grateful to Abed for taking the time to share his story and wisdom with our students. His journey serves as a powerful reminder that with perseverance and the right support, success is within reach.

We also extend our thanks to Cooley LLP for hosting this event and providing lunch for our students. Their continued partnership helps us offer valuable learning experiences like these to the teens we serve.
