Harvinson
Hello, my name is Harvinson, and I am a freshman at The Preuss School UC San Diego. I am the youngest of my siblings in a Vietnamese immigrant house-hold.
Living in a very crowded house with six people in my family, I rarely have any space to process my emotional well being. I grew around my older siblings and would do what they told me all the time. I would follow what they would do and copy their passions. Over time, I felt that I never found what I really wanted to do in the future and what I wanted for myself. My teachers would always ask me what I wanted to be in the future, but I would always change my answers for what I wanted to be whether it was an engineer or an artist.
Recently, I have been liking the idea of science, specifically biology. The subject just made me gravitate towards the fascinations of the world. Science made me notice that it really made my curiosity about our planet grow. This helped me come out of my shell and ask more questions and share ideas. I want to learn more about mysteries that happen around the world. I hope that science can be an impactful part of my life and it changes who I want to be in the future.
My motivations for writing this paper and in my life are my parents. As the youngest of all my siblings I am the last to do things. I am the last one that will leave my parents for school and go to college. I was born when my parents were in their late 30’s, so I worry about the time I have with them. I try to not worry as they have lots of time left, but I want to work hard and make them proud of me. They are my motivation to keep going in life and keep studying to get in the most prestigious schools. Worrying about my parents will only restrict me from opening myself up to higher places.
If I get the chance to be accepted, I would use the money for resources that will help me more throughout my school journey. A laptop or a tablet will help me do my homework at home since I don’t have any personal devices to use. I could also help my sister get new tools for her art class because she is very good at it.
For my future, I want to go to the top tier universities like UCLA or UC Berkeley. These schools are in California, so I am relatively not far from my parents. I told the interviewer that I wanted to go to UCSD, but she said that I should dream higher because the school I go to right now can provide me with the opportunity to get in already. I want to achieve this by working very hard in school and getting good grades, but that is basic. What these schools really want is someone who is creative and a leader.
My journey consists of meeting many new people and making sacrifices. I have lost many people whom I love, but I don’t let it stop me from striving for better things to happen. I also hope that my journey will have me helping others in need. I will always strive to learn more and more things so that I am able to keep growing as a person.
I appreciate your time and consideration.
