Rayann

My name is Rayann, I am sixteen years old and a sophomore at the Preuss School UCSD. As a middle child of six siblings and the only girl, I have learned early to speak up for myself and support others around me. My parents immigrated from a third world country to establish a better future for their children. They have always pushed me to strive for success in an unfamiliar environment. Due to their sacrifices, academics have always been a priority for them so they could see me thrive. This motivation has shaped my work ethic and determination through all-nighters, energy drinks, and supportive expectations to meet.

Outside of school, I enjoy reading and writing as better ways to understand the world around me, and baking as a means to bring family together through food. I am also actively involved in volunteering in my schools clubs BSU, Key Club, MUN, as well as Red Cross, where I have learned the importance of uplifting and giving back to the communities that support me. I have always been interested in clinical and lab work since a young age because of the way science could be used to understand human bodies and improve people's lives.

Looking towards the future I am wanting to pursue a career in STEM, particularly in pharmaceutical development. My interest in this field has come from a desire to work in medicine, but focused more on the behind-the-scenes work, combining science with real world impact and using innovation to improve quality of life. Through my involvement in San Diego Squared, I am actively exploring STEM pathways and gaining exposure through hands-on learning that prepares me for future careers. I aspire to continue my passion and academics through higher education, where I can further develop the skills necessary for my personal success. I hope to become the change I’d like to see in the world and contribute to creating treatments and solutions to address health challenges in underserved communities.

Programs like A Bridge for Kids align with my goals because they emphasize leadership, opportunity, and guidance. These values are not only important for my growth, but are essential to why I want to be a part of ABFK. A Bridge for Kids is meaningful to me because it represents the support and direction that students like me need to remove barriers for opportunity. As someone who has grown up in environments that were shaped by high expectations as well as coming from a family that has made significant sacrifices for my benefit, I understand how valuable structured support can be from programs that invest in students lacking access to resources. The pathways offered through A Bridge for Kids would allow me to fully participate, focus on my growth, and take advantage of leadership and academic opportunities without financial limitations. This support would not only help me succeed currently, but also prepare me to give back and create impact in the future. Thank you for your time and consideration.
