Jazlyn
Hello, my name is Jazlyn. I am currently a junior at Gompers Preparatory Academy. I am a hard-working first-generation Mexican American student. I was raised in a small trailer park in Southeast San Diego, I am the second oldest of 5. Growing up in a household where both of my parents work full time jobs to make ends meet, I always wanted to make a better life for myself and my family by working hard.
Since I was little, I have witnessed my parents struggle financially. When I was in elementary school, for a long period of time, my parents, my siblings, and I had to live at my grandparents house. Recently, my father, a hard working construction man, has had to take a second job on weekends to save money to buy a new fridge. The fridge in my home has stopped working, therefore every meal my siblings and I eat is either fast food or at my grandparents house. These are only some of the many burdens my family has had to endure. Despite these difficulties, I remain focused on school and helping to take care of my siblings. My parents have worked insanely hard for my siblings and I to have a bright future. I want to make the most of every opportunity available to help take a weight off of their shoulders.
While in high school, I have stayed motivated to make my family proud and be able to attend a four year university. I am a focused and hard working student with a 3.9 GPA. I am currently taking 3 AP classes, hoping to earn college credit that will allow me to save time and tuition in my future. My dream is to attend UCSD. I plan on joining a medical program to become a pediatric nurse. I deeply enjoy working with kids and I would love to be able to make a positive long lasting impact in their lives.
In addition to academic goals, I also like to focus on my hobbies. I love to read, swim, work out, and hang out with my friends. In the past, I was a part of my school's cheerleading team. Working with an amazing group of girls and supporting our school helped me build my leadership and confidence. Ever since I was little I have loved swimming, my favorite days are the days where I get to go to my neighborhood pool and swim for hours. It helps me forget about any stress that I have over school or family. I usually spend my free time reading, I love it because I get to grow my vocabulary and enjoy a good story at the same time. I am very interested in working out with my older sister because it gives us an opportunity to bond and it helps relieve stress and anxiety. My favorite part about all of my hobbies is that I get to teach my younger siblings about them too.
This scholarship would mean a lot to me because it would allow me to give my parents one less financial burden. If I were to get accepted into A Bridge for Kids, I would use the money towards my school uniform, academics and extracurricular activities. For my academics, I would buy school supplies and school clothes. My high school requires us to wear uniforms, I currently own only two pairs of my school pants, but both have a hole in them so I use a safety pin to keep them in place. I would love to buy a new pair. I would use it to pay for my AP exams and a tutor to help me with those classes. I am taking three AP classes this year and I am planning on taking five next year. Another thing that would benefit my learning is a new laptop. With a laptop I could access online resources and complete assignments quicker than using my phone. I would also like to buy fiction books about mystery, romance, and young adults. I would like to buy non fiction books about self-help, journalism and about human health. For my extracurriculars I would purchase track shoes, as I am planning on joining my school's track team this upcoming fall and I don't have the proper shoes to wear while running. I would also purchase school supplies like new notebooks, pencils, and a binder because I have been using the same items throughout high school.
Overall, this scholarship would help aid my education and school experience. I am determined to make the most of the resources provided to me and extremely grateful for the opportunity provided to me.
