Marcus
My name is Marcus, I am a 10th grade scholar at The Preuss School UCSD and I am 15 years old. I would like to thank the organization of A Bridge for Kids, the friend who nominated me, and the interviewer for giving me this opportunity to elevate myself to greater heights.
My goals and interests stem from wanting to help people and because of my compassion. That is what shaped my career of wanting to be a doctor. I want to help people but I also want to be remembered. A quote by Eiichiro Oda that personifies me is “When do you think people die? When they are shot through the heart by a bullet? No. When they are ravaged by an incurable disease? No. It’s when they are forgotten.”
I am not originally from the US, I was born in Kanagawa, Atsugi, Japan and I immigrated to the US early in my life. Even though I was a foreigner, I have been exceptional in school and it is because of my father’s guidance. He has always helped me become a better version of myself and aspire for greatness. I started my academic journey in a low income school in the US because my family was low income but then I was given the opportunity to go to Preuss. This opportunity in itself gives me the opportunity to attend a high end college but my family is still in a financial predicament. Opportunities like this allow me to lessen the burden of money on my parents and allow myself to succeed.
My father has always been my role model and also a goal, everyday before school he would encourage me to learn something new but to become better than him. He has never been an obstacle but always a milestone for me to reach. My mother was who taught me morals, compassion, and she maintained my heritage. She helped me never forget where I was born, she taught me family recipes, and home was a blend of American values and Japanese culture. Her compassion is what led me to wanting to be a doctor.
The Preuss School UCSD has opened my horizons, it is the reason this essay is being written. Preuss was a gateway to many opportunities. For example, it has given me access to more advanced classes. I am studying in an AP class for African American Studies, an interdisciplinary course on dispelling racial misconceptions and bringing light to African accomplishments. It has also allowed me to play sports like lacrosse and I am even on the lacrosse team. I emphasize the importance of Preuss in my life because I believe ABFK can provide the same if not more opportunities.
The reasons I want to join the ABFK program are to solidify my future career, lessen the financial burdens on my parents, and introduce myself to new opportunities. But before all these reasons, I have to earn this scholarship. The main priority from this scholarship is to purchase myself a laptop, a quality laptop that will not only last me through high school but through college.
In conclusion, I want to join the ABFK program to obtain a laptop to help me pursue my future endeavors and career choices. I would like to again thank ABFK for this opportunity and I hope this essay finds the reader well.
